Albert J. Diehl

Albert J. Diehl, age 89, of Spring Garden Township, York, died at 11:17 PM Thursday, August 31, 2023, at his residence.  He was the husband of Helen L. (Lehr) Diehl.

Born December 26, 1933, in York, he was a son of the late James A. and Mary E. (Myers) Diehl.

He began his career working three jobs as an automobile mechanic, and rebuilding motors for York Auto Parts. He then worked at the former Steuben Motors as Service Manager, for three years, before moving to Harrisburg Volkswagen, as Service Manager, for six years.  In the early 60’s he opened a three-car garage providing sales and services of used Volkswagens, later moving to Sherman and Philadelphia Street, opening A & J Cars of Quality.  In 1964 he moved to Whiteford Road, opening Toyota and Subaru dealerships and, ultimately, also owning Oldsmobile, Mercedes Benz and BMW dealerships.  Among his proudest accomplishments was that of earning his Private Pilot’s License, traveling extensively throughout the country.

His business acumen was only exceeded by his well-known philanthropic generosity, including Saint Matthew Lutheran Church, York College of Pennsylvania, Logos Academy; and ACCESS York, to name a few.

Mr. Diehl was a member of the former Messiah Lutheran Church, where he served as Council President, and was currently a member of Saint Matthew Lutheran Church, and the Country Club of York.

In addition to his wife of 72 years, he is survived by a daughter, Kathy A. Amspacher, of Hendersonville, North Carolina; a granddaughter, Alecia Ampacher; and a sister, Shirley Porret, of Washington State.  He was also preceded in death by a son, John C. Diehl; a brother, Charles H. Diehl; and a sister, Joan Holtzapple.

Private funeral services will be held at Kuhner Associates Funeral Directors, Inc, with his Pastor, The Rev. Kevin Shively, officiating.  Burial will be in Mount Rose Cemetery.
