Arthur Murphy III Obituary

Arthur Thomas Murphy, III, age 74, of Spring Garden Township, York, died at 3:37 PM Tuesday, August 2, 2022 at Wellspan York Hospital.  He was the husband of Joanne Murphy.

Born April 25, 1948 in York, he was a son of the late Arthur T. Murphy, Jr., and the late Belle L. (Harris) Murphy.  A 1966 graduate of Suburban High School, he attended Salem College, and graduated from West Virginia University in 1970.

He worked as an Agent for Prudential Insurance Company for 25 years, and as a part time Real Estate Agent for Eisenhart Real Estate.  He was employed by Murph’s Study Hall for 32 years, 19 of which he was the owner.  He also owned Murph’s Other Bar, and Murph’s Other Suds Laundromat, with his wife and sons, all serving York College students.  Most recently he was the owner of Mukie’s Seal Coating from 2008 until retiring in 2021.

He was a member of the Quarterback Club of York for 45 years, serving on its Board of Directors and managed the York Newspaper’s and Quarterback Club of York’s High School Football All-Star Football Game for 26 years.  He was also the founder and member of the York Yankees of the Men’s Central Baseball League for 13 years, winning two League Titles and two Colonial Baseball Championships.   He enjoyed high school basketball, and West Virginia University football and basketball, along with the New York Yankees, and the Green Bay Packers.

If you entered Murph's Study Hall in the 80's, 90's, and prior to 2007 there was a high likelihood of you seeing Tom Murphy.  If coming at night you would find him sitting on a stool, glasses on his nose, flashlight in hand.  During the day, in the middle pool room sitting at a table by the closet.  He had a bit of a rough exterior, but underneath was someone who cared about people.  If you were a regular, you were family.  If you were a college student, you were part of his extended family.  If you needed help with anything, you could go to him.  If you needed to talk or to get some advice, he was there.  If you did go to him, you got his best and the best he could do for you.  Of all of his accomplishments and achievements, helping people should be his legacy.

In addition to his wife of 55 years, he is survived by a son, Kevin A. Murphy, and his wife Jennifer, of York; and three grandchildren, Payton, Delaney and Callahan.  He was also preceded in death by a son, Benjamin P. Murphy in 2020.
