Carl W. Fidler Obituary

Carl Wilmer Fidler took his last road trip to his heavenly home from his daughter’s residence in Manchester on November 9, 2024, at the age of 93. Born in Reading Township, Adams County on December 8, 1930, he was the eldest of six children. It is interesting to note that Carl shared the same birth date of both of his parents.

He graduated from East Berlin High School in 1948 and entered the US Air Force serving in Okinawa during the Korean War. He also served in the Air National Guard at Olmstead AFB in Middletown, PA.

Carl married Beverly Webster July 24, 1954, and happily shared all his life adventures with her for 66 years until her passing in 2021. Together they had three children: Diane (Ervin “Sam”) Garman, of Manchester, Jeffrey (Betty) Fidler and Randy (Christina) Fidler, both of Dover. Grandchildren, Alicia (companion Scott) Gibbs, Kresta (Ryan) Haviland, Melissa Rauhauser, Christina (Brent) Cornman, Angel Rudy, Jodi Marang, Scott (Shannon) Fidler, and Trevor (Shannon) Fidler. Great grandchildren, Taylor (Brandon) Cutler, Tim Gibbs, Alexis and Laci Cunningham, Calvin, Colby and Courtney Beck, Justin Witmer, Jr., Jenna and Kendra Cornman, Brittany Margetis, Ely Zeigler and one on the way. Great-great grandchildren, Khloe and Andrew Harman, and Penelope Cutler. Carl is also survived by his sister, Jean Zeigler, of Dillsburg, PA and many nieces and nephews. His siblings Harold and Wayne Fidler, Gladys Montgomery and Joyce Storm preceded him in death.

Carl retired from Caterpillar after 30 years and continued working as owner/operator of C. W. Fidler Excavating until retiring at the age of 90. During his life he also was employed as a police officer, bus driver, farmer, dog officer, fire police officer and would get called upon as a dowser/diviner to find underground water. He was seldom idle and enjoyed meeting people. He loved traveling in his car, his motor home and river cruising. On his last cruise he was invited to perform with the ship’s entertainment, making it the highlight of his trip. He was known as a cowboy and sharp dresser dawning fancy western shirts, flashy belt buckles, his cowboy hat and boots. He had the “gift of gab” and was invited as guest speaker by ALLVETS to talk about his military days. His hobbies included reading western books, writing poetry (he was a published poet), playing checkers, showing his Bricklyn at car shows, putting on his uniform and attending veteran events and parades and playing his loved Martin guitar and singing with his friends at numerous venues including the Church of the Open Door gospel jam, Franklintown Fire Hall and Young’s Church. He was a member of Mount Wolf VFW, Shiloh American Legion, Seven Mountains Bluegrass Association and Goldsboro Fireman’s Club.
