Carole A. Dorsch, MD, 83, of Spring Garden Township, York, died peacefully on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, after a long illness.

She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Oscar and Victoria (Bubnis) Dorsch. She is survived by her sister, Beatrice Miller; two nephews, Andrew Miller and his wife, Beth, and Eric Miller; and two great-nephews, Nathan and Justin Miller.

Born on November 17, 1942, in Baltimore, MD, Carole devoted her life to the pursuit of knowledge. Her natural curiosity and interest in how things worked fueled her desire and determination to become a doctor. After earning her undergraduate degree at Goucher College, she was admitted to and obtained a medical degree from The Johns Hopkins Medical School. During the course of her postgraduate work, she began to specialize in rheumatology. After completing a fellowship at UCLA, she returned to Baltimore to work in Johns Hopkins’ Connective Tissue Division at Good Samaritan Hospital under her mentor Dr. Mary Betty Stevens. In 1982, she joined a private practice in Pensacola, FL, before moving to York in 1988 to be closer to her aging parents. In York, she worked as a rheumatologist in private practice before joining the York Hospital staff. Later, she became the first instructional faculty member at the York Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC) campus, where she taught biology for 11 years before retiring in 2017. She remained an adjunct professor after retirement.

Throughout her life, Carole enjoyed traveling anywhere and everywhere with friends or family. To Carole, traveling—whether it be cruising through Alaska, hopping around the Caribbean, or dragging her nephew through the streets of Tokyo—went hand-in-hand with her passion for learning. When asked why she liked to travel so much, Carole would respond, “I always want to see what’s around the next corner.”

But Carole didn’t keep the knowledge she gained to herself. Instead, she shared it generously with others, from residents at the hospital to nursing students at HACC. She had a lifelong love of teaching, and even as she battled health issues in her retirement, she continued to tutor young students hoping for a future in medicine. In 2003, she established the Oscar and Victoria Dorsch Scholarship for Medical Education to provide financial support for medical students at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Carole’s life was also marked by her dedication to and love of her family. A loyal daughter, she spent many days and nights helping her parents run their fast food and ice cream restaurant, even while in medical school. As a firstborn, she watched over, cared for, and delighted in her younger sister, nephews, and great-nephews. She served as family organizer, financial advisor, and doctor on call. On holidays, she acted as gourmet chef, going out of her way to create elaborate meals to make the occasion special. And of course, she was incredibly generous, always sharing her time, resources, and love.

When she wasn’t working, teaching, traveling, or spending time with family and friends, she enjoyed cooking, reading (especially history books!), watching crime- and military-themed tv shows, putting jigsaw puzzles together, and caring for her many rescue cats.

Funeral services are scheduled for 3:00 PM Thursday, August 27, 2026, at Kuhner Associates Funeral Directors, Inc., 863 South George Street, York, with the Rev. Glenn Miller officiating. Viewing will be from 1:00–3:00 PM. A private burial will be held in Gardens of Faith Memorial Gardens in Baltimore, MD.
