Catherine Patricia "Pat" Rutter Obituary

Catherine Patricia “Pat” Rutter, formerly of York, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 19, 2025, in Venice, Florida. She was the beloved wife of the late John P. “Jack” Rutter, with whom she shared 63 years of marriage until his passing on November 25, 2021.

Pat was born on April 3, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Margaret (Eckman) O’Hara. After the loss of her mother during her infancy, she was lovingly raised in Scottdale, Pennsylvania by her father and Aunt Mame. Pat grew up above the family’s restaurant, where she developed a lifelong love for ice cream thanks to the endless supply at her fingertips. In her senior year of high school, her father passed away unexpectantly.

With the loving support of her aunt, Pat went on to graduate from Scottdale High School and later from Chestnut Hill College in Chestnut Hill, PA, earning her degree in 1957. During her college years, she met the love of her life, Jack. The two were married on September 13, 1958 in Camp Hill, PA. They settled in York, Pennsylvania, where they raised their family and spent their entire married life.  After Jack’s passing, Pat relocated to Village on the Isles in Venice, FL, where she lived the last three years of her life in a warm, welcoming community.

As an only child, Pat had always dreamed of a large family – and she created one full of love. She was a devoted mother of five, grandmother of 17 and great-grandmother of eight.  Pat cherished time with her family, especially during beach trips to Stone Harbor, traveling the world with Jack, and hosting gatherings at the home they built together. Just recently, she joyfully celebrated her 90th birthday in Tampa, surrounded by family. She especially loved receiving photos of her grandchildren and great-children - those images never failed to bring a bright smile to her face.

A devout Catholic, Pat was an active member of St Patrick’s Catholic Church in York for 52 years, later joining St. Mary’s Catholic Church in York and, most recently, Epiphany Cathedral in Venice.  She was a dedicated volunteer throughout her life – serving at St. Patrick’s Catholic School, on the boards of the United Way and Holy Child Nursery, and as a member of the Junior League of York for 10 years. Pat was also a long-time member of the Country Club of York, where she enjoyed golfing, paddle tennis and the camaraderie of her friends.

Pat was preceded in death by her husband, Jack, and her son, Michael Rutter of Denver, CO. She is survived by her children: Maureen Brown (David), Susan Pierce (Clint), David Rutter (Jessica), and Kate Herzog (Tommy), as well as family members Mary France and Shanna Rutter. She was a proud and loving grandmother to 17 grandchildren: Caitlin (Patrick), Maggie (Lance), and Christopher Brown; Matt (Rachel), Kevin, Tom, and Katie Pierce; Patrick (Carly), Kevin, Courteney (Mike), Catherine, Michael, Isla, and Esme Rutter; and Jackson, Henry, and Vincent Rutter. She was also a cherished great-grandmother to Nora, Caroline, Ellie, Christian, Rhett, Lily, Jenna, and Keira.
