Charles O. Merson Obituary

Charles “Chuck” O. Merson, 74, of Dover Township, Dover, passed away Monday, September 21, 2026, at WellSpan York Hospital. He was the husband of Dianne M. (McComas) Merson.

Born August 5, 1952, in Baltimore, Maryland, Chuck was the son of the late Orrie M. and Hazel M. (Campbell) Merson. A proud Eagle Scout, Chuck carried the resourcefulness, self-reliance, and readiness to lend a hand that came with that achievement throughout his life.

Chuck served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War as a Radioman 2nd Class. He was a graduate of Baltimore Polytechnic Institute and attended the University of Maryland.

Chuck had the kind of mind that was rarely content simply knowing that something worked- he wanted to know how it worked, why it worked, and whether he could make it work better. Electronics, gadgets, tools, machines, motors- if it could be taken apart, studied, modified, rebuilt, or improved, it had his attention. And if Chuck took something apart, there was a very good chance every last piece was being carefully saved because, of course, he might need it when he put it back together.

He was an inventor in the truest sense of the word, holding patents of his own and possessing a meticulous, endlessly curious mind that followed him throughout his life and career. Chuck spent about 20 years in drafting and design with AAI Corporation before continuing his career in HVAC with Trans-Air Manufacturing, Carrier Transicold, and Bergstrom.

Retirement didn't particularly suit a man who couldn't sit still. Chuck later worked as a bailiff at the York County Courthouse, where he looked out for Judge Todd Platts, and eventually found his way to Ace Hardware- a fitting place for a man who genuinely enjoyed being surrounded by tools and people who needed to know how to use them.

Teaching may have been Chuck's greatest love language. If he knew something, he wanted you to understand it too, and not just the answer, but how he got there. He was extraordinarily intelligent, direct, and matter-of-fact, with a sense of humor to match. There was rarely much guessing about where Chuck stood on a subject. He was a larger-than-life presence, and when he spoke, people listened- not simply because he commanded a room, but because Chuck usually had something worth saying.

Chuck loved cars, and anything with a motor was likely to get his attention. He enjoyed drag racing, motorcycles, RC cars, and the mechanics behind all of them. Whether full-sized or remote-controlled, if it had an engine, went fast, or could be tinkered with, Chuck was interested.

He also loved fishing, the beach, being outdoors, and the simple pleasure of a warm summer evening spent on the back porch with his dogs. There were many beloved dogs throughout Chuck's life, each lucky enough to find a place beside him.

But for all the things Chuck could design, fix, build, explain, or improve, nothing mattered to him more than his family. His children admired his innate strength and knew his love for them had no bounds. If one of them called and needed him, Chuck didn't just offer advice from the other end of the phone. He got in his truck and showed up- usually with an answer, a tool, a plan, or some combination of all three. That was Chuck. He was a problem-solver by nature, but more importantly, he was someone his family knew they could count on.

In addition to his wife, Dianne, Chuck is survived by four sons, Brandon L. Merson and his wife, Angie, of Newberrytown; Derek M. Merson and his wife, Jessie, of York; Cameron A. Merson, of Dover; and Justin J. Merson, of Dover; two daughters, Lindsey N. Noll and her husband, Tony, of Windsor, and Hazel M. Wagaman and her husband, Cameron, of Hanover; his grandson, Aiden; and two step-grandchildren, Callen and Ollie.

He was preceded in death by his three sisters, Frances, Maryann, and Virginia.

Chuck leaves behind more than the things he built or the problems he solved. He leaves behind a family who learned from him, relied on him, laughed with him, and always knew exactly where they stood with him. He taught them to be curious, to figure things out, to use their heads, to stand strong- and, perhaps most importantly, that when someone you love needs you, you show up.

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, October 16, 2026, at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville, with full military honors. Kuhner Associates Funeral Directors, Inc., 863 South George Street, York, is in charge of arrangements.
