Cynthia Meraklis Obituary

Cynthia Ann Meraklis (Spence) passed away at her home on Thursday, September 10th, 2020. She was 58.

Her welcoming smile and gift to make everyone feel important will not be forgotten. Cindy was humble, sweet, lived simply, and enjoyed the little things in life.

She was the daughter of Harry and Carol (Abbott) Spence. She was born on November 22, 1961 in Baltimore, MD. Cindy recounted many stories growing up with her siblings Harry Spence, Vincent Spence, Lisa McLaughlin, Kimberly Rupert, and Jodi Gruby. She considered herself a tomboy, as she loved to tag along with her big brother Harry. In reality, she was the perfect mix. She wasn’t afraid to get dirty but also enjoyed hanging out with her sisters. In later years, if she wasn’t with her sisters, she was on the phone with them speaking of life’s successes, life’s struggles, and her days spent as a dental assistant. Some of her fondest childhood memories were spent in Maine sledding and ice skating with her dad, summers with Nana (Annie Hawkins), or playing tennis and eating snowballs with her late stepdad, “Daddy-John” (John Makaokalani).

Cindy met Michael Meraklis when she was just 15 and the rest was history. The two were married on September 4, 1981 and were inseparable. Cindy loved Michael and Michael loved “Cin”, “Annie”, or “Cindy-Ann”, some of Michael’s favorite nicknames for her.

They went on to have three children - Sarah, Angela, and Meno. Cindy found her her calling in life. She was the best mom, put her kids’ needs before her own, and always made sure they knew they were loved.

Life only got better when she became “Yia Yia” (grandma in Greek) to Alexandra, Addison, Isabel, Helena, Landon, Seth, and Brea. She liked to greet them with “hey babe”, loved cooking with them, attended their school performances, sporting events, enjoyed movie marathons, concerts, putting together puzzles, sleepovers, and looked forward to family get togethers.

Cindy loved her family, including her in-laws. She is survived by Elizabeth Canalungo, Meno Meraklis, Christina Meraklis, Linda and James Jensen, Craig and Christine Meraklis, Angie Spence, Robbie McLaughlin, Curtis Rupert, and Rick Gruby.
