Dale A. Hammels, son of the late Karl and Sally (Kasanoff) Hammels, died at 1:35 AM Friday, February 6, 2026. He was born February 4, 1938, in the York Hospital, and is survived by his wife, Miriam (List) Hammels with whom he was married to for 62 years. He was preceded in death by both of his daughters, Kathi and Debbi, and his sister, Maxine Geller.
Dale graduated from William Penn Senior High School where he was a member of the marching and concert band. He also attended Rider College. He was a member of Temple Beth Israel and the York Jewish Community Center where he was a board member in charge of the annual blood drive.
Dale was the assistant pro at Cool Creek Country Club in the late 50’s and early 60’s. Following that he joined the National Guard. He was known as the “stereo king” when he was the owner of Sol Kessler’s Hi-Fi Shop in downtown York. After he closed that store, which was like a downtown institution, he worked at Mailman’s, M&L Appliances, Silo, American Appliances, Circuit City, and Sears all of which closed while he was working for them.
For over 70 years he loved playing golf and was a lifetime member of the Outdoor Country Club where he won both the Senior’s and Tuesday Night League’s Championship in the same year at the Outdoor Country Club. He had three holes in one on the golf course. His fourth hole in one came in the Kiwanis Club Hole in One Contest. His most memorable golf event occurred when he earned both a hole in one and eagle 2 on a par four hole in the same round. He held the eighteen-hole putting record at the Outdoor Country Club with twenty-one putts.
