Dr. Ronald Elton Wallace, Ed.D., passed away peacefully at York Hospital on Monday, January 6, 2025, after a brief illness. He was 87 years old. Born on January 5, 1938, in Roaring Spring, Pennsylvania, he was the son of Mildred and Furman Wallace, also of Roaring Spring.
As a youth, Dr. Wallace attended Roaring Spring High School. Roaring Spring, a paper mill town like Spring Grove, was a place he always fondly remembered. He often said that when the wind was right, it “smelled like home.”
Dr. Wallace graduated from The Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor’s degree in education. He was a proud career educator, a path that led him to earn a Master’s degree from Millersville University and a Doctorate in Education from Temple University in Philadelphia. His career took him to schools in both Lancaster and York counties, where he eventually became the principal at Southern Elementary in Glen Rock. He later concluded his career in the York City School District at York High.
In 1963, Ron met and married the love of his life, the former Dona Lee Mentzer of Ephrata, Pennsylvania. Ron and Dona celebrated 52 years of marriage before her passing in 2015. After retiring, Ron joined Dona in working at her business, American Tile Specialties in Emigsville, Pennsylvania.
Ron will be remembered for his passion for reading about early American history and the Founding Fathers, especially his admiration for Thomas Jefferson, his fanaticism for Penn State football and Orioles baseball, and his love of the television show MASH.
Ron is survived by his two sons and their families: Jonathan and Marjorie Wallace of Maryland, and their two children, Rachel and Hunter; and Patric and Regina Wallace of York, and their two children, Blake and Lauren.
A graveside service is scheduled for 11:00 AM Friday, January 17, 2025, at Mount Rose Cemetery. Kuhner Associates Funeral Directors, Inc., 863 South George Street, York, is in charge of arrangements.
