Earl Eugene Godfrey Obituary

Earl Eugene Godfrey entered Heaven on December 20, 2025, at Victorian Villa, in Dallastown.


Born at home on June 2, 1924, Earl was the son of John L. and Sarah (Markey) Godfrey. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, George, Edwin and Paul Godfrey, and his sisters, Grace Hollman and Edith Free. He is survived by his sister, Ruth Barshinger and many nieces and nephews.


Earl grew up on the family farm and joined the Navy in 1944. He was medically discharged after a training accident in Fort Pierce, Florida in 1945 and returned to York where he went to work for McKay Chain Company and retired in 1987. He also later retired from Markey Construction Company in 2017 at the age of 93.


He was an avid hunter and a member of Wild Boy Hunting Camp in Potter County. Earl loved to be busy outdoors and always took great pride in his lawn, flowers, and vegetable gardens.


He is survived by his loving wife Verna, whom he married July 10, 1947. He is survived by his daughter, Debra Cameron (Bill) and by his son, Gary Godfrey (Debbie), of York; a granddaughter, Jill Carnahan (Jason) and great grandchildren, Camryn and Connor, of Jamison, PA and granddaughter, Angel Myers, of York.


Earl was a lifetime member of New Fairview Church, had a kind soul and loved the Lord. Her will truly be missed by all his kindness, quick wit, endless stories and great memory.


A Celebration of Life is scheduled for 10:30 AM Saturday, December 27, 2025, at New Fairview Church, 1873 New Fairview Church Road, York, with his pastors, The Rev. Ryan Billet and The Rev. Paul Bentzel officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30-10:30 AM. Burial will be in New Fairview Cemetery with military honors by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. Kuhner Associates Funeral Directors, Inc., 863 South George Street, York, is in charge of arrangements.
