Edna June (Nichols) Douglas, age 100, of Springettsbury Township, York, died Sunday, June 1, 2025, at her residence. She was the widow of the late Prof. Joseph F. Douglas Sr., her husband of 68 years.
Born April 12, 1925, in Leavenworth, Kansas, she was the daughter of the late Reuben R. Nichols Sr. and Maude (Gudger) Nichols. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Miner Teachers College (now University of the District of Columbia) in 1946, and worked as a first-grade teacher in the Washington, DC public schools, including Lucy Ellen Moten Elementary School in Anacostia. She was a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.
Mrs. Douglas loved people and enjoyed knitting, sewing, crocheting, gardening and walking. For many years she volunteered with various community organizations, including the Head Start program of the Community Progress Council, Crispus Attucks York, Penn Laurel Girl Scout Council, York Hospital and YWCA York.
Mrs. Douglas attended both First Presbyterian Church of York and Small Memorial AME Zion Church of York.
Mrs. Douglas is survived by her four children: Marian Douglas-Ungaro, of Washington, DC, Rome, Italy, and York; Joseph F. Douglas Jr. (Ana Kellerman Douglas) of Dalzell, SC; Marie A. Douglas, of Central and South America; and Barbara J. Douglas, of York. She is also survived by four grandchildren: Suriya, Daniel, JoAna and Angelina; five great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. She was also preceded in death by her younger brother, Reuben R. Nichols Jr., MD of Montclair, NJ; and a son-in-law, Ambassador Carlo Ungaro, of Italy.
Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, June 11, 2025, at 12:00 PM, at Calvin Memorial Chapel of First Presbyterian Church of York, 225 East Market Street, York, PA 17403, with Rev. C. Kyle Gott officiating. Viewing will be 11:00 AM-12:00 PM. Burial will be in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens. Kuhner Associates Funeral Directors, Inc., 863 South George Street, York, is in charge of arrangements.
