Obituary

Francis Charles Fogle, age 99 of West York, Pennsylvania went to his eternal rest on the afternoon of Friday, August 25, 2023, at the York North Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.  He was the husband of the late Marion H. (Lawrence) Fogle also of West York.

Born on January 3rd, 1924, he was the second child of the late Charles and Anna (Riese) Fogle of York, PA and was the last surviving member in a family of seven brothers and sisters.  After growing up and working on the farms and orchards of North York and Manchester, Francis was conscripted out of high school into the Army of the United States.  While Francis was proficient as a mechanic and trained on half-tracks, he spent a significant amount of time driving the colonel’s jeep, earning him the nickname of “Dusty”.  Serving in the European Theatre with the 574th Armored Division until the end of WWII.

Francis Started his civilian career as an auto mechanics and eventually entered the business world as a partner of Fogle and Naill Garage for more than 26 years.  Known by most as “Frank”, he earned a reputation as a quality conscious and fair mechanic.  Looking for more job security, Frank entered the United States Postal Service and worked his way to the “Letter Carrier” status prior to his retirement in 1987.

Frank was a life-long member of The First Saint John’s Lutheran Church in York. A past president of the York County Garageman’s Association.  The oldest member of the West York VFW #8951.  A long-time Steward and member of Zeredatha-White Rose Lodge #451 F&AM, the Tall Cedars of Lebanon, York Forest #30, a member of the Valley of Harrisburg AASR and a life member of the Prince Athletic Association.

With his automotive interests, Frank was proud of his involvement in the area stock car racing scene.  Working with Bernie Adams, the Dottie’s Diner cars piloted by Junie Taylor and Walt Ragan and with Fred Jones.  Frank witnessed the opening of Lincoln Speedway, Bowling Green Speedway and while his health allowed it, he was a regular at William’s Grove Speedway.

Francis is survived by his sons, Eugene C. and wife (Vicki) of Genoa, IL and Dennis K of Shiloh, Pennsylvania; two grandchildren, Keith Fogle (Ashley) of Baton Rouge, LA and Katelyn Lancaster (Michael) of Sycamore, IL as well as five great-grandchildren Brooks, Hayes, and Knox Fogle, along with Easton and Talon Lancaster.

Francis was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years Marion and his daughter-in-law Carol Jean (Rutledge) Fogle, as well as three brothers Gordon, Dale, and Donald.  Also, three sisters Louise Sprenkle, Audrey Orr, and Norma Jean Null.

A special Thanks to John Eline, the gang at September house and all the nieces and nephews who visited and took care of Frank over the past few years.
