Janet B. Gemmer Cassimatis

Janet B. Gemmer Cassimatis, age 95, of Naples, Florida, formerly of Indianapolis, Indiana, and York, Pennsylvania, died early morning, Thursday, May 19, 2022 at Barrington Terrace in Naples.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Arthur H. Gemmer, and her second husband, The Honorable Emanuel "Mike" Cassimatis.

Born June 17, 1926 in York, she was a daughter of the late John G. Bergdoll, Jr., and the late Ethel (Jennings) Bergdoll.  She was a1944 graduate of William Penn High School, and a 1948 graduate of Radcliffe College, and had worked as a legal secretary in Indianapolis.

During her junior year at Radcliffe, Janet met her husband Arthur who was studying at Harvard Law School. They moved to Indianapolis after their marriage where their four children were born and raised. Janet was a very active, loving mother and wife; an avid tennis player; and a member of the International Bible Study Fellowship program (which she considered a turning point in her life). 

After Arthur passed away in 2004, Janet reunited with her high school sweetheart, Mike Cassimatis. They spent five happy years together before Mike’s passing. Janet then relocated to Naples to be close to her daughter Gretchen and family.

She is survived by two sons, Baron G. Gemmer, and his wife Lydia, of Wayne, Pennsylvania, and Gregory H. Gemmer, and his wife Lynn, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; a daughter, Gretchen M. Schuster, and her husband Bob, of Naples; three grandchildren, Melissa Gemmer, Dr. Cassandra Schuster, and Robert Schuster;  a great grandchild, Forest Gemmer-Grose; a brother, John G. Bergdoll, III; and three sisters, Jane B. Allen, Joyce M. Fitzpatrick, and Dr. Jacqueline M. Hershberger. She was preceded in death by a son, Arthur H. Gemmer, and a sister, Joan B. Lundberg.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2:00 PM Saturday, October 15, 2022 at Kuhner Associates Funeral Directors, Inc., 863 South George Street, York. A reception with the family will immediately follow.
