Jean C. Stevens of York died on August 30, 2023, at the age of 107. She was a resident of Country Meadows of York-Leader Heights. Mrs. Stevens was the wife of the late Henry B. Stevens and the late Warren Toland.
Born May 1, 1916, in Washington, New Jersey, a daughter of the late Richard and Elsie (Ford) Cochran, Mrs. Stevens completed her college studies at the University of Tennessee. She subsequently worked as a trainer of nurses at York Hospital, an elementary school teacher, the host of “The Kitchen Show with Jean Stevens” on local TV station WNOW, and a dietician at Memorial Hospital in York.
Until late in life, Mrs. Stevens was an active member of the American Association of University Women and the York Art Association. She was passionate about cooking, watercolor painting, traveling, and caring for her many generations of dogs. Friends and strangers alike drew inspiration and joy from her unyielding optimism and constant good cheer. She enjoyed few things more than learning about the life of a new acquaintance, always drawing out people’s best qualities. She had a kind word for everyone and was full of wonder for everyday pleasures.
Mrs. Stevens is survived by two sons, Peter Stevens of York and Thomas Stevens of Aurora, Oregon; daughters-in-law Ginny Stevens of Aurora, Oregon, and Lucy Stevens of York; and ten grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Bryan Stevens of York, and by her three siblings.
A memorial service is scheduled for 10:30 AM Saturday, October 7, 2023, at Country Meadows of York-South, 2760 Pine Grove Road, York, with Chaplain Tim Wagner officiating. A reception with the family will immediately follow. Kuhner Associates Funeral Directors, Inc., 863 South George Street, York, is in charge of arrangements.
