Jeffrey L. Hayes Obituary

Jeffrey L. Hayes, age 83, of Spring Garden Township, York, died Friday, January 16, 2026, at his residence. He was the husband of the late Bonnie A. (Sharp) Hayes.


Born October 22, 1942, in Railroad, he was a son of the late Warren Hayes and the late Ruth (Tyson) Brodbeck. He first served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War and then worked as a mechanic at Rudisill’s Gulf Stations in downtown York and Mount Rose Avenue. He then began employment at BMY and retired from its successor United Defense. He was a volunteer firefighter for Victory Fire Company for more than 30 years, where he served as a Captain and Assistant Chief. He also was a BINGO volunteer for the Fire Company and Lions Club four nights a week. He was a member of the Victory Athletic Association, the York Archers, and Spring Grove VFW.


Mr. Hayes is survived by a daughter, Shannon Crist, and her husband, Jesse, of York; two sons, Brian Hayes, and his wife, Jill, of Arizona, and Gregory J. Hayes, and his wife, Lisa, of Texas; ten grandchildren; two great grandchildren (with two additional great grandchildren expected); a brother, Barry Hayes, of Lancaster; and a half-sister, Sherry Chubb, of Windsor. He was also preceded in death by a half-brother, Keenan Hayes, a stepsister, Joanne Spangler; and a grandson, Aaron.


A Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date. Workinger Semmel Funeral Homes and Cremation, 849 East Market Street, York, is in charge of arrangements.
