John Paul “JP” Burkett, 81, passed peacefully Wednesday, June 23, at Rest Haven York. He was the widower of Colleen (McFadden) Burkett. They were married 48 years at the time of her death in 2018 and parented a daughter Michelle Burkett Mingarell, who died in 2009.
Born October 9, 1939, in Camden, N.J. to the late Dr. John P. and Esther (Mortenson) Burkett, he graduated from St. Andrew’s School in Middletown, DE, and Franklin and Marshall College, Lancaster.
Mr. Burkett retired in 2008 after enjoying a successful career with IBM, DuPont and Berg Electronics — employment that afforded him frequent opportunities to travel the world.
The Burketts lived in Wellsville, where he was active in historical preservation, but spent the majority of their married life in Spring Garden Township. They enjoyed entertaining and opened their home to family and friends, including two foreign students, Monica Paiva and Will Tseng, who became like family.
Mr. Burkett is survived by his sister-in-law, Maureen McFadden of York; two sisters, Patricia McCraw, Ft. Mills, S.C., and Alice Christina Watkins, Mantua, N.J., and a brother, Eric Burkett, Ocean Township, N.J.; several cousins and a niece, Shannon Burkett, wife of Andy Kris, and their children, Alice, Cooper and Summer.
Services will be held at a future date at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of York where Mr. Burkett was an active member and often delivered sermons. In 2011, under the name Brother John, he wrote the book ”Continuing the Journey, Conversations Regarding the Soul”. Kuhner Associates Funeral Directors, Inc., 863 South George Street, York is handling final arrangements.
Donations in his honor may be made to UUCY, 925 S. George St., York, PA 17403.
