Joseph Francis Ell, Command Sergeant Major of the United States Army, Retired, born August 25,1940, passed into eternal glory on January 18, 2024.
Joe was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He will be forever missed by his family as life without him will never be the same.
Joseph Francis Ell, age 83, passed peacefully on January 18,2024, due to complications of dementia. His wife Judy, daughters, Wendy and Jenny and his son-in-law’s, Rich and Frank were by his side when he entered the gates of heaven. His eternal home.
Joe was born in St. Peter’s, Missouri, August 25, 1940, to Agnes and Ferdinand Ell.
Joe attended St Peter’s Catholic School when upon graduation he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. Joe met Judith Ann Kahl while stationed in Quantico, VA. Judy at the time was employed with the Federal Government. They were married on May 17, 1963, and were excited to start their lives together. On October 26, 1964, their first daughter Wendy Sue was born in Honolulu, Hawaii 3 weeks before Joe was sent to fight the war in Vietnam where he served 3 tours. After returning home from Vietnam, Joe was stationed in Camp Pendleton, California and their second daughter Jennifer Ann was born on February 4th, 1968. Upon discharge from the Marine Corp in 1968, the family moved to Waynesboro, PA. Joe worked at Letterkenny Army Depot as a small arms repair technician. He then joined the Army Reserves and was stationed at Site A in Greencastle PA until his retirement as a Command Sergeant Major in the United States Army. Joe loved being a grandfather. He actively participated in the lives of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He deeply loved them, and they loved him. He was a wonderful role model and a positive influence on each of their lives.
Joe was a devout follower of Jesus Christ. He lived out his faith daily. He loved reading the scriptures and attending church. Joe and Judy participated in small group bible studies and various church activities. Joe enjoyed hunting, golf, music, and woodworking.
Joe will always be remembered as a man who loved and served his country. He wore his Vietnam Veteran hat every day. Joe was a man of great character and integrity. He always had a smile and encouraging words and a positive outlook on life. Joe will live on in the hearts of all those who loved him most.
Joe was preceded in death by his sister Elaine Kofron and is survived by his loving wife Judy, his daughters Wendy and Jennifer, his grandchildren, John, Alexandra, Frank, Bradley, Luke and Payton and his great grandchildren, Luna, Jaxson, Noah, and Jaxon. His brother James Ell and Sherre Shelby.

7-I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8-Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day-and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.
A private service will be held on February 23, 2024, at 10:00 AM at Kuhner Associates Funeral Directors, Inc., 863 South George Street, York, PA 17403. Burial will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery will full military honors.
