Martha Lewis Baker “Mike” Frankenberry, age 90, of Spring Garden Township, York, passed away at 6:12 PM Sunday, May 2, 2021 surrounded by her family at Country Meadows of York-South.
Born May 31, 1930 in York, a daughter of the late Frederick H. and Martha G. (Winters) Lewis, she was affectionately nicknamed “Mike” by her father when he met his third daughter. She graduated from William Penn High School in 1948, and later that year married John E. Baker II. She lived in York until 1985 when she married Kistler “Ken” Frankenberry, and then moved to Louisville, Kentucky. After his death in 1997, she returned to York and again became an active Yorker.
“Mike” is survived by her four children, William H. Baker, II (Susie), of Drexel Hill, Pa, John E. Baker, III (Lois Keithly), of Arlington, MA, Marcy Baker Seitel (Peter), of Mt. Rainier, MD, and Stephen M. Baker (Jean Treuthart), of York. She is also survived by Stanley Fells, of Seattle, Washington, and Gene Fells (Sue), of York; a stepdaughter, Jill Cushing (Kevin), of Northville, MI; 15 grandchildren, Frances Baker Chamberlain and Patrick, John and Michael Baker; Rebecca, John and Tim Baker, Jesse and Elizabeth Seitel, Lauren Wilson, J.R. Fells, Jordan Fells, Laura McDowell, Jack, P.J., Claire, and Sean Cushing; 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews, and their children and grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Alice Lewis Strittmatter, Jean Lewis Fulton, and Patricia Lewis McElroy, as well as a stepdaughter, Barbara McDowell, and an infant grandson, Andrew Winters Baker.
“Mike” was a homemaker, a golfer, an active church member, and community volunteer. She believed in taking action to make the world a better place wherever she went as an expression of her Christian faith. From the time of her birth until 1985, “Mike” attended the First Baptist Church in York. She attended the Second Presbyterian Church in Louisville, Kentucky when she remarried and, upon returning to York, she attended the First Presbyterian Church where she served as a Deacon, a Stephen’s Minister, and an Elder.
In the York community, “Mike” most recently served on the Board of Martin Memorial Library. She was a member of the PEO Sisterhood, a philanthropic and scholarship organization. Earlier in her community volunteer career she was a co-founder of Planned Parenthood of York, where she served as its Board President. She also served as President of the York Symphony Auxiliary. She was a member of the York County Heritage Trust, the Garden Club of York, Junior League, Women’s Club, and the Country Club of York.
“Mike” will be remembered for her tremendous friendliness, her kindness to others, an unstoppable positive attitude, a wicked golf swing, her great style, and most of all, her faith in God and in the people she loved.
Private funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 AM Wednesday, May 26, 2021 at Kuhner Associates Funeral Directors, Inc. Burial will be in Mount Rose Cemetery. Live stream of services will be available at www.Facebook.com/KuhnerAssociates
