Michael J. Roland Obituary

Michael J. Roland, age 80, of Springfield Township, York, died in the early hours of August 25, 2025, at Pappus House in Thomasville. He was the husband of the late Patricia A. (Morgan) Roland.

Born October 2, 1944, in Shenandoah, PA, to the late Walter and Mary (Jenkins) Roland, he was the youngest of ten children and a graduate of Shenandoah Catholic High School. During the Vietnam War he served in the U.S. Navy, on the USS Reeves, and was a recipient of the Vietnam Service Medal with three Bronze Stars and the Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device. Mike worked for Ernie’s Camera Shop, the Evening Herald newspaper as a freelance photographer, and retired from the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare, Pottsville. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council #618, and a former Eucharistic Minister with Annunciation BVM (Divine Mercy) Parish, Shenandoah.

Mike is survived by a son, Michael R. Roland, and his wife Stephanie, of York; two grandchildren, Zoe and Graeme; a brother, Patrick Roland (wife, Helene); a sister Sarah Quinlan (husband, Wallace); and a large extended family of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Walter (late wife, Charlotte), John (late wife, Kathleen), Mary Kozlosky (late husband, Leonard), Catherine Gormley (late husband, Jack), Margaret Ambrose (late husband, Jack), Cecelia Donlan (husband, Joseph), and infant James Roland.  Family was the center of Mike’s life and he was always armed with a new collection of jokes for every gathering. He loved Notre Dame football, a “tall pint of Guinness”, a “wee dram” of Scotch or Jameson, and mashed potatoes with gravy.
