Richard E. Bates, age 88, of Windsor Township, York, entered into the presence of Jesus at 7:32 AM Friday, November 8, 2024, at Wellspan York Hospital. He was the husband of Ruth D. (Thompson) Bates and the late Nancy L. (Wolf) Bates.

Born February 10, 1936, in York, he was a son of the late James B. and Mary E. (Strine) Bates.  He was a 1954 graduate of William Penn High School and retired from American Chain and Cable Company after 45 years of employment.  He also served in the Pennsylvania National Guard. He was a member of York Alliance Church, Yellow Breeches Anglers, York County Fire Association, Heritage Hills Senior Golf League, and Pocahontas Hunting Club in Clifton, Colorado. He was also a life member of York Rifle Association and Eagle Fire Company, where he had served as a president.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Bates is survived by two daughters, Deborah L. Stapf, and her husband Steve, of Spring Grove, and Lisa A. Paules, and her husband David, of Windsor; Ruth’s children, Eric Douglas, and his wife Bridget, of Mount Holly Springs, and Jason Douglas, and his wife Dana, of Bellefonte; and six grandchildren, Deborah, Emily, Danielle, Mackenzie, Konnor, and Lily. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Donald B. and Kenneth J. Bates.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 AM Thursday, November 14, 2024, at York Alliance Church, 501 Rathton Road, York, with Pastor Tim Shuey officiating. Viewing will be from 9:30-10:30 AM. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery. Workinger Semmel Funeral Homes and Cremation, 849 East market Street, York, are in charge of arrangements.
