Richard E. Smith

Richard E. “Gene” Smith, age 91, of York, died Thursday, April 13, 2023, at Misericordia Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was the husband of the late Delores I. Smith who passed away in 2016. They shared 53 years of marriage together.

Born November 28, 1931, in York, he was a son of the late Byron and Irene (Myers) Smith. Gene was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, and he retired from Federal Paper Board Company where he worked as a Truck Driver for 34 years.

Mr. Smith is survived by two sons, Richard E. Smith II and his wife, Aleta, and Loni R. Smith, all of York; his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Gene is survived by two brothers, Barney and Charlie, and one sister, Maime. In addition to his wife, Dolly, he was preceded in death by his brother, John, and sisters, Doris and Louise, and a stepdaughter, Karen.

Funeral services are scheduled for 1:30 PM Wednesday, April 19, 2023, at The Semmel Chapel of Workinger Semmel Funeral Homes and Cremation, 849 East Market Street, York. Viewing will be from 12:30-1:30 PM. Burial will be in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens. Military rites will be presented by the York County Veterans Honor Guard.
