Rick Smith Obituary

Rick Smith Obituary

Rick Smith, age 83, of Stone Hill, York Township, died peacefully surrounded by is family on Friday, September 4, 2026, at his residence. He thanked God that he was raised on a farm, or he might never had been able to woo his wife, Carol Joyce Tipton who only agreed to go out with him because she wanted to go horseback riding. Rick and Carol were married in 1968. For 58 years Carol referred to Rick as “The man she loves”. Carol has been a partner in his life. Without her love and support Rick would not have been able to achieve his success professionally or raise such amazing children.

After walking to a one room schoolhouse, uphill both ways, and in epic snowstorms, he graduated from Northeastern High School. He was a graduate of York College of Pennsylvania and attended Susquehanna University.

For Rick, Real Estate, was a calling from God and not a job. He appreciated all of the people of York County who allowed him the opportunity to help them during one of the most stressful decisions in life. Selling real estate for 61 years, he started working at Wagner Meisenhelder, moved to Bob Yost Realty, later becoming Coldwell Banker, then Prudential and now Berkshire Hathaway. He cherished most, his time working for Bob Yost who became his mentor and (gin playing) friend. Rick became the top selling agent for Coldwell Banker in the world seven years in a row. He went on as one of the top selling realtors in York County for more than 50 years. It is hard to overstate the significant impact Rick made in the housing market in York County. Despite beginning many days before 7 a.m. at the Colonial Coffee Shop and working past 10 p.m., Dad said he never worked a day in his life because he loved what he did. He was so devoted that he once presented a contract at the hospital between labor pains. Rick’s optimism was so abundant that he invented his own vocabulary to declare how “Astroperiously Phenomenal” he truly was because every day was “a beautiful day in York, PA”

In addition to being number one in the world in sales, one of his crowning achievements was developing Stone Hill, where only nice people live. The joy of his professional career was the opportunity to work with his son, Drew Smith. Drew is an integral part of the Rick Smith Team and all of their success. Rick was proud to know that Drew will continue helping our York County neighbors achieve their dream of home ownership.

He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church for more than 50 years, Realtor Association of York Adams County for 61 years, the Country Club of York, the former Lafayette Club, and the York County United Way de Tocqueville Society.  He also served on the Board of Directors of the Hahn Home for 17 years.

In addition to his wife of 58 years, he is survived by his son, Andrew Tipton Smith, and his wife Catriona Reese Smith, and their children, Isobel Helen, Griffin Reese and Charlotte Pearl Smith; his daughter, Adrienne Nicole Smith, and her children, Samuel John Brenner, and Tipton Hope Brenner; and his sisters, Barb Kling and Dot Rohrbaugh. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Mary (LaRue) Smith; and a sister, Linda Brillhart.
