With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Robert K. Bookwalter, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and educator, who left us far too soon. Born and raised in York, Bob dedicated his life to serving his community and nurturing the minds of its youth.
A proud graduate of York High in 1966 and Shippensburg State College in 1970, where he was a member of the Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity, Bob returned to his roots, beginning his teaching career at Jackson Elementary in 1970. His passion for education led him to serve as Principal at Phineas Davis Elementary School and Ferguson Elementary School, positions he held with immense pride. He often remarked, “I loved it. I retired too soon,” a testament to his unwavering dedication to his students and community.
In retirement, Bob embraced life with enthusiasm, embarking on travels to national parks, historic sites, and various sports venues. He cherished time spent with family, whether it was a holiday gathering, a special occasion, or a trip to the beach in Cape May. New Year's Day held a special place in his heart, a day of pork and sauerkraut and football. A crossword superfan, he also found joy in the accomplishments of his children, Craig and Laura, and his beloved grandchildren, the "Grands": Hailey, Kevin, Casey, Cameron, Layla, Vincent, Ryan, Jake, and Gabriel.
Bob was known for his gentle spirit, always finding the good in others and in every situation. Intelligent, soft-spoken, and reflective, he possessed a quick wit and a loving, quirky sense of humor. He was a pillar of strength and kindness for his family and friends.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jo; his son and daughter-in-law, Craig and Karyn; his daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Chad; his cherished grandchildren; his devoted sister-in-law, Kate; his sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Mark; sister-in-law, Anne and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Max and Erma and his brother, Dwight.
Funeral services are scheduled for 1:30 PM Tuesday, March 25, 2025, at Workinger Semmel Funeral Homes and Cremation, 849 East Market Street, York, with Chaplain Katherine Seiler officiating.
