Robert J. Richards Obituary

Robert James Richards, 86, of York, PA, passed away on February 22, 2025. He was the son of Mott Gerald Richards and Corinne Katherine (Renwick) Richards of Sandy Ridge, PA. Born on February 2, 1939, in Philipsburg, PA, he moved to York in 1942 and attended local schools, graduating from William Penn Senior High School in the Class of 1958.

Robert proudly served in the U.S. Navy. He enlisted as a Naval Reservist and was honorably discharged after serving from 1958 to 1960 aboard the USS Sierra AD18, based out of Norfolk, VA.

Following his military service, Robert dedicated 30 years to Caterpillar Tractor Co., working in the parts department until his retirement. A proud member of UAW Local 786, he served as a safety committeeman and steward, advocating for his fellow workers.

A lifelong sports enthusiast, Robert enjoyed football, basketball, baseball, and model trains. He also gave back to his community as a coach for EYC North Hills baseball, sharing his love of the game with young athletes.

Above all, Robert was a fun-loving family man who will be deeply missed. He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Thelma Richards; Robert and Thelma had five children, four of whom survive him; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A private family service will be held to honor his life. Workinger Semmel Funeral Homes and Cremation, 849 East Market Street, York, is in charge of arrangements.
