Sarah Stahl Obituary

Sarah “Scrooch” Stahl, a longtime artist and devoted mother, passed peacefully Thursday, March 18, 2021 of natural causes at Country Meadows of Leader Heights in York, Pennsylvania. She was 89.

The former Sarah Adele Bolton, daughter of Dr. Richard W. Bolton, a dentist and an artist, and his wife, Sara A. Shipley, homemaker, was born in Philadelphia. Raised in a farmhouse in North York in Emigsvillle, she later moved to Elmwood Blvd.

Sarah spent the majority of her life in York County. She graduated from York High and earned her English degree as a 1954 graduate of University of Pennsylvania. She met John ‘Jack’ Stahl, and they married in 1955. Shortly after, they relocated to New York where Sarah worked as a Junior Editor at Time Life Magazine. In 1958, Sarah and Jack moved to Caracas, Venezuela where she enjoyed golf, tennis, and worked on theater productions for the Venezuela-American Chamber of Commerce. Sarah was blessed with the birth of John F. ‘Johnny’ Stahl, III in 1964. She spent 20 years appreciating all that Venezuela had to offer including entertaining friends at their beach house in Rio Chico and raising their beloved son. In 1980, Sarah and her son, John moved to the U.S. where they began a new life in York.

With the support of family and friends, she re-integrated into York with her own greenery business decorating offices with live, tropical plants. She was an active member of The Garden Club and a life-long member of The Country Club of York (CCY). Like her father, painting was her passion, and she was an avid reader and member of several informal book clubs over the years. Sarah volunteered as an interpreter to the local police department, and she gave her time to the local Hispanic community. A fun-loving, adventurous person, she enjoyed weekend trips to New York City with her close friends, and she spent 12 happy years with Jack Cox. “She brought her thoughtful excitement to local productions at Appell Center for the Performing Arts [formerly known as Strand Capital Theater], and she was a member of the board at CCY,” said John Stahl of Monument, Colorado. She had a full life of 41 more years in York with family and longtime friends.

In addition to John Stahl, she is survived by brother, Richard Bolton. Plans for a celebration of life are incomplete. Kuhner Associates Funeral Directors, Inc., 863 South George Street, York, is in charge of arrangements.

Gifts or donations can be made in Sarah’s name to The Garden Club of York, 970 Summit Circle North, York PA 17403 or GardenClubofYork.com.

“I want to thank my friends and my mother’s close friends for support during this difficult time.”
