Sheldon Brindle Obituary

Sheldon R. Brindle, 97, of York, PA died peacefully at York Hospital on September 23, 2023. He was the husband of the late Josephine J. “Josi” (Horn) Brindle. Born May 30, 1926 in Huntingdon County, to the late H. Clayton Brindle and Ethel Grace (Garner) Brindle.

He graduated from Huntingdon High School in 1944 and immediately enlisted in the Army/Air Corps during WWII. The war ended just as he completed his training in Denver, Colorado as a remote-control turret mechanic gunner on the B29 plane, so the remainder of his service time was spent in the Philippines. Following his discharge, he left Huntingdon for Thompson Business School in York, PA, where he met his future wife, Josi.

Sheldon spent his entire career as an accountant for York Auto Parts, while also performing several other duties there. After spending his working hours indoors Sheldon couldn’t wait to clock out and go outside! Aside from his family, Sheldon’s greatest passion was running. He was a member of the York Road Runners Club and couldn’t wait to turn 60 because he knew he would win his age bracket in 10K and 5mi races-which he did! In his later years he switched to walking and cycling, particularly along the Rail Trail.

Sheldon was also an avid sports fan, supporting Pittsburgh professional teams, as well as Penn State at the collegiate level. He was also a proud member of the Boy Scouts of America, both as a scout and in later years as an assistant Scout Master of Troop 19, based out of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. He was known for leading many weekend campouts and week-long hikes along the Appalachian Trail. He was also an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church where he was involved in the choir and many church activities. He was a patriotic veteran who flew his American flag every day.

He is survived by a son, Thomas S. Brindle and his wife, Debra, of Scranton PA as well as three daughters: Stephanie J. Folk and her husband, Thomas, of York, PA; Valerie D. Sykes and he husband, Jack, of Avalon, NJ; and Stacia L. Boyer and her husband, James, of York, PA. In addition, Sheldon is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and 2 step-great grandchildren, as well as his sister Ivajean Valle of Huntingdon, PA. He was predeceased by 2 brothers, Carl and Clair Brindle; and his sister Anna Mary Grubb.
