On Thursday, June 18, 2026, at 5:48pm, the checkered flag dropped for Steven M. Witmer, and he took his final lap. He was age 68 of Conewago Township, York.

He was born August 14, 1957, in York to Ardene (Bucher) Grove, of York and the late Sterling “Sonny” Witmer. He retired as an autobody mechanic and was previously employed at Quigley Motor Company. He was a member of the Wago Club and York County Racing Club.

Steve was very well known in the dirt track racing community for his years of dedication to the sport. His love, passion, and knowledge go unmatched with anyone he has helped over the years. He started working on racecars at the age of 15 and still worked on them until his final day. He had over 200 wins as crew chief and wrenched on many winning cars.

In addition to his mother, Mr. Witmer is survived by a daughter, Stephanie L. Witmer and “the baby” Racelyn of Liverpool, New York; a brother, Bryan K. Witmer, and his wife Kelly; and a stepbrother, Richard “Chip” Helfrick, III, and his wife Ellen. Along with nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by a stepsister, Patta J. Houser, and her husband Thomas; stepmother, Treva V. Witmer; and brother Dale E. Witmer.

Funeral services are scheduled for 7:00 PM Thursday, June 25, 2026, at William E. Little Funeral Homes, Inc., 60 South Main Street, Manchester. Viewing will be from 4:00-7:00 PM.  Burial will be private. Family requests that racing shirts and attire be worn. All memories and stories are welcome to be shared.
