Susan Nan (Dorsey) Boyd, age 78, of York, died at 1:11 PM Saturday, November 4, 2023, at UPMC Memorial. She was the wife of Michael C. Boyd.
Born May 12, 1945, in York, a daughter of the late George and Beatrice (Hutchens) Dorsey, she was raised in Shrewsbury Pa. She was always influenced by the small-time values she learned there. She attended Susquehannock High School Class of ’63. Sue was a faithful attendee at her class reunions having recently attended her 60th.
After high school she attended Millersville University and York Hospital School of Nursing. Sue became certified as an C.I.C.N. (Certified Infection Control Nurse). Her career took her to the old Memorial Osteopathic Hospital for over 25 years, then to Pleasant Acres and finally to Rest Haven. She happily retired when her granddaughter Emma was born. At each stop Sue made friends she still endeavored to keep in touch with.
Sue met her husband Mike on a blind date set up by mutual friends. On that date Mike took her to see Mel Brooks’ Silent Movie. As you might know that movie was all subtitles but Sue, showing some vanity, did not wear her big black rimmed ‘Buddy Holly’ glasses. The courtship did work out with their marriage in Shrewsbury on March 3, 1979 despite some slightly inebriated fellows showing up the night before at her window singing ‘My Girl’.
Sue went on many adventures, some more willing than others, with Mike. He dragged her up Old Rag Mountain in the Shenandoah National Park. There was that overnight bike trip. She rafted the Lower Yough with friends from the Conewago Canoe Club. Sue developed many deep and long-lasting friendships with the extraordinary members of that group. Sue was willing, at least for a while, to sleep on the ground when Mike took the kids along. Later, she did welcome when Mike took the kids and she stayed home, truth be told.
Sue was a miniature doll house enthusiast She received her first project as a Christmas present. After decorating and building furniture for that one, she did multiple projects from grand houses to rooms with loving care.
Sue loved her cats. She usually had two at a time. Some were adopted as strays from the neighborhood. Her love was generously returned by them.
Sue was a faithful member of Christ Lutheran in downtown York. Both Kevin and Christopher were baptized and confirmed there. This moral compass was important to her.
Sue led her life with love and integrity. Mike could never even get her to drink a beer. Chocolate was a no-no upon her doctor’s instructions. Sue was the rock her family was built on. Her family hopes to live up to her high standards. May God bless and may she rest in peace.
In addition to her husband of 44 years, Mrs. Boyd is survived by a son, Christopher; sister-in-law, Beth Boyd; and her beloved grandchildren, Emma Boyd and Benny Starks. She was also preceded in death by a son, Kevin C. Boyd; a sister, Joyce and husband Zane Miller; and in-law parents, Curtis and Evelyn Boyd.
