William Hart Hollman passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones at the age of 78. He is survived by his sister Jan Nemshick, his three children, Ellen, Eric, and Ben Hollman, and his grandchildren Griffin, Evelyn, Locke, and Aiden.

Hart was born in Allentown Pennsylvania in 1947 to his parents Wilbur and Jeanette, who were both musicians and music teachers. It was from them he received his first stringed instrument at the age of 3, and he never stopped playing.

Always proclaiming that he “plays for a living,” Hart Hollman joined the DSO in 1973 after previous appointments as a section violist with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and as Principal Viola with the North Carolina Symphony. He graduated from Indiana University in 1969 with a Bachelor of Music in viola performance, where he studied with David Dawson. His past teachers include David Madison for violin studies, Max Aronoff for viola studies, and Joe Depasqualle for orchestral excerpts.

His solo career has included performances with the North Carolina Symphony, the York Symphony, the Birmingham-Bloomfield Symphony, the Farmington Philharmonic, the New Center Symphony, and the Warren Symphony. His chamber music involvement included 23 years with the American Artists Series, serving as a faculty member of the Utah Music Festival, founding the Amble Music Festival String Quartet, and performing in other professional quartets. He founded the Motown Romance, a string recording group that most notably performed the arrangement for "I Believe I Can Fly," on the original Space Jam Soundtrack in 1996. Hart was active as a private viola teacher and chamber music coach for countless students and played a large role in school music enhancement programs.

Hart's other interests included sailboat racing (10 Port Huron-Mackinaw races), rock climbing, marathons, triathlons, painting, drawing (seven years at the Baum Art School), and he was a co-founder of the Over-The-Hill-Gang, on its 32nd year of backpacking in the United States and Europe. He was an avid photographer and has displayed and featured his work for many years.

He lived a beautiful life full of joy and music, and he will be greatly missed.
